NEW TECHNOLOGIES
In the last decade, tissue engineering, technologies in biomaterials, micromechanics, and surgical procedures are evolving rapidly in Orthopaedics. The application of evolving bioengineering technology contributed to the development of different types of scaffolds with different matrices. These scaffolds can be divided according to their chemical nature, they are biocompatible (by not triggering any inflammatory response and not being cytotoxic), biodegradable by offering a temporary support to cells in order to promote replacement of a newly synthesized matrix and induce proliferation of the transplanted cells.
The use of a three-dimensional membranes culture was developed with the aim to improve both the biological performance of chondrocytes as well as render the surgical technique easier, in autologous chondrocyte implantation. A scaffold that is properly sized can be positioned directly into the articular defect under arthroscopic guidance or by mini-arthrotomy.
However, these scaffolds are widely used nowadays in various cartilage regeneration techniques with or without cell cultivation.
