Ligaments
Growth factor applications for the treatment of injured ligaments, has been proven valuable in ligament healing, by stimulating the production of matrix. We are also investigating the application of scaffold transplants along with growth factors for the healing of ruptured ligament with encouraging findings.
We have been using cellular therapies in the treatment of injured ACL by addressing the defect in healing at a molecular level and leading to a more biological way of healing, with the use of growth factors and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Recently we published a study on the possibility to modulate MSCs and growth factors to enhance the healing of a repaired ACL. We perform primary repair of partial ACL lesions by re-approximating the torn part with sutures and performing bone marrow stimulation and growth factors injection into the torn ligament with favorable results even at medium term follow-up.
